The Last Peasant War: Violence and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe

In his new book, The Last Peasant War: Violence and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2025), Jakub Beneš offers a fresh interpretation of Europe in the era of the world wars from the vantage point of the countryside. Focusing particularly on the territories of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states, Beneš argues that rural violence, revolutionary movements, agrarian politics should be seen as interconnected phenomena, which together profoundly shaped modern central and eastern Europe. Peasants tried, for the last time in Europe and through various means, to mold modern society according to their own visions and aims.
