The Central European History Convention (CEH-C) brings together scholars from all over the globe studying any aspect of the history of the region defined by the countries of the former Habsburg Monarchy, its neighboring and successor states. As you can see in this program, with 2 keynotes, 1 roundtable, 54 panels, 25 poster presentations, and 10 interdisciplinary research lab engagements, from July 17–19, 2025 registered participants will spend three days at the University of Vienna main campus thinking through and beyond their specialties in open dialogue with scholars of all levels, from the Medieval period to World War Two.

One of the featured highlights of this year’s Convention is the roundtable and two panels dedicated to assessing the influence of Pieter Judson’s work on the broader field of Habsburg studies. Another special quality of this Convention is the emphasis placed on spotlighting emerging scholars’ research. As such, mid-career and senior scholars are engaging mostly as Discussantators, chairs, and audience. The language of presentations will be English; but in the hallways, over the coffees and lunches, no doubt the ring of many different tongues will confirm the anchored interest in the issues the convention addresses that affect a plethora  of different local worlds and their larger communities.

The combination of all these aspects of the Convention help explain why over 300 people have registered to attend all or part of the programming. But the other reason why participation is so broad is because there are no registration fees for this conference; there are discounted prices on housing options; and almost half of conference participants received some sort of travel subsidy to attend. All of this is thanks to the generous support this Convention has received from governmental, educational, and research institutes in Austria, Europe and North America, as well as the astounding individual generosity of well over half of the participants who found their own means of securing funding to attend. Thanks to these efforts of individuals and organizations, the CEH-C has been able to put an ambitious program together that includes a far greater swathe of its intellectual community than usually can be represented at any one conference.
