Výzkumné semináře MÚA AV ČR – podzim 2025
Anotace přednášky:
Among the new states established after the First World War in East Central Europe, Czechoslovakia was the most democratic – and the most precarious. In dealing with a plethora of anti-state groups and (supposedly) disloyal populations, the government relied primarily on legal prosecution, in particular according to the 1923 Protection of the Republic. In this talk, I will discuss the dilemmas that the Czechoslovak judiciary faced in trying to defend the state’s integrity and democracy, resorting at times to highly repressive practices in the fight against authoritarianism.
